We've scheduled three specific events. Below you'll find event details, a map, a few hotel recommendations, and more. After reviewing the details, please take a moment to update your RSVP which will help us obtain a more accurate headcount for each event. Thanks so much.
We’ll raise a glass or two to celebrate the man. Food and drinks will be provided, featuring gumbo from John's friend Tyler, and a 3 foot hoagie from Alexandria's Bronx born chef. Dad loved to cook and pour drinks for the people who mattered to him. There is no obligation, but this venue does ALLOW outside food and drink. If you want to bring something to share, this is the event for it, just let us know in the RSVP. The venue is a converted textile mill and is located very close to Kathy, Ben & Erin. It's called The Link in Old Town. Parking is available both in a small lot and on the street. Tyler and Ben are planning to share some stories around 6:30PM.
Driving directions:
The area is a grid. While there are many one way streets, N. Payne St is a two way street. You'll likely come South on Richmond Highway (AKA US-1, AKA North Henry). Turn Right/West on Princess, and Left/South on N Payne. Look for a low white building with a parking lot on the left, in a block and half.
Metro directions:
The location is a half mile walk eastward from either Braddock Road or King Street metro stops. (Both stops are on the Blue and Yellow Lines)
If 8:30 feels like an early ending, Murphy's Grand Irish Pub is a half-mile stumble down King Street, though Dad always said an “Irish Bar on St. Patrick’s day is like amateur hour.”
John's ashes will be committed to the Arlington Columbarium with military honors. Please note: anyone over the age of 16 will need a valid ID to enter Arlington and the cemetery website provides a list of prohibited items including alcohol. This event is outside, so dress appropriately.
We will meet at the Memorial Avenue entrance to Arlington. If you drive, you will be instructed to park in a queuing lane until it is time to proceed to the columbarium.
Details:
• Please be aware that the service will include a rifle salute.
• You ARE permitted to take photos at Arlington. If you happen to get a nice one, please share it with us.
• Please remember that Arlington requires all visitors 16 years and older to present a photo ID upon entrance.
• Business casual is recommended.
Arlington Entrances:
Be aware that there are multiple entrances to Arlington Cemetery, including one often used for funerals at an onsite chapel. You DO NOT want to go to the Old Post Chapel. You DO want to go to the Main Entrance on Memorial Ave. It's the largest, the one where the metro is and the one most commonly used by tourists.
Driving:
The Memorial Ave entrance is the one right across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial. The simplest routes are via VA-110 North or George Washington Memorial Pkwy South. They share an off-ramp directly to Memorial Ave. When you reach it turn Left/West, and look for family, attendants or signs. All other routes lead to the Potomac Park traffic circle. Go slow and watch for signs and pedestrians. When you reach the circle, follow it around, and head away from the bridge, West into the cemetery. You'll be on Memorial Ave. Look for signs or attendants and ask for the queuing lanes.
Metro:
The Arlington Cemetery Metro Stop (Blue Line) is on Memorial Ave. When you reach it, head up to street level and walk about a block West, in the direction of the Women's Memorial look for signs or attendants and ask for the queuing lanes.
Taxi / Car share:
Just make sure to tell your car that you want to go to the Memorial Ave. or main entrance. After you're dropped off look for signs or attendants and ask for the queuing lanes.
After the service, lunch will be provided by John's sister and brother at a beautiful, nearby venue overlooking the National Mall. Guests who wish to, are invited to share a remembrance of John. Top of the Town is a 4 minute drive from Arlington Cemetery. Complimentary parking is available. We know many of you will be leaving town this afternoon, you're welcome to join for as long as you can. Consider visitng the US Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima) on your way out. It' just a block down the hill.
Driving:
We'll leave Arlington on Memorial drive east bound and head to the Potomac Park traffic circle. Go 270° around the circle and take your second opportunity to make a right (or effectively a left). Now we're northbound on S. Arlington Blvd. Watch for pedestrians. In eight tenths of a mile take the exit for Rosslyn Key Bridge. Take an immediate left on N Meade St. toward the Iwo Jima Memorial. Take your second right onto 14th street. Head two blocks up hill toward N Oak. Just before you reach N Oak, the entrance to Top of the Town is on your left. You may wish to drop passengers here.
At the intersection, take left on N Oak, the free event parking lot is on your right in 300 feet.
When John died, he was in the midst of writing a memoir for his Granddaughter, Mullaney.
He had a full outline and a few complete chapters. We've posted them for you to read on JohnConnors.memorial. It would mean a lot if you'd help us flesh out the book by picking one or two of the points on the outline and writing down the things you think John would want Laney to know about those parts of his life. Detailed instructions are on the site.
The website also includes other ways to share memories of John. You can upload a photo, write a story or recipe and more. A record of your memories would be a wonderful gift to us.
If you haven't already booked travel, we'd encourage you to do so. Peak cherry blossom season hasn't been announced yet, but it has been trending earlier, and last year it landed on March 23rd. There are loads of places to stay around town, but here's a quick list of some notable spots:

If you'd like additional recommendations for your trip, please contact Ben before March 10th.
For those driving North after lunch, GW Parkway provides an easy route to the beltway and on to I-95 North. This avoids I-395 through downtown DC. Under regular driving conditions it is faster or equivalent to the eastward route, and generally more pleasant to drive.
